QUEENIE

“I found this camelback headboard for the primary bedroom suite at the thrift store. I will have it covered in this velvet, black and white houndstooth fabric,” Kit said.

“Oh wow! Where did you find the velvet houndstooth?” Alison asked while touching the fabric.

“Queenie told me about a textile designer. I visited his studio, and this was the first thing I saw,” Kit answered.

“I saw a sketch of this but didn’t know he’d produced it. It’s so luxurious.”

Kit, Alison, and I were reviewing design plans for one of our clients. The client wanted a modern, glam design, so we decided on a black, white, and grey palette.

“I also want to add this gold statement chandelier. The pop of gold will draw the eye up, making the room feel larger,” Kit said.

“Hey,” Kem said, knocking on the opened door.

He looked good in his black King Construction polo and dark-wash jeans.

“Hey,” I smiled.

Meeting him at the door, we quickly kissed.

“Hey, ladies,” Kem waived.

“Hi, Kem,” they responded.

“I thought you would be out on site all day?”

“I did, too, but the new company we hired to remove that tree finished in record time,” Kem explained. “I have some things to handle in my office. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“I’ll stop by before I head out.”

“Alright,” Kem smiled.

I turned and saw both Kit and Alison smiling broadly.

“I love y’all,” Alison said.

“It’s so stinkin’ cute!” Kit said.

“You and Kem together gives me hope that there’s someone out there for me,” Alison said.

“Right, instead of these degenerate low-lives, we seem to keep attracting,” Kit said.

“You seem happy. Are you happy?” Alison asked.

“With Kem? Yeah,” I smiled. “I am.”

“Oh my gawd,” Alison gushed.

It was common knowledge that Kem and I were together. I was enjoying myself and the time we spent together. Since our kiss on the couch, I tried to kiss him every chance I got. We hadn’t moved beyond kissing, but I knew it was coming. Although the thought still scared me, I repeated my mantra; If I go out on a limb, I’d rather go out with Kemuel than with anyone else.

After completing the review with my team, I searched for Kemuel. He wasn’t in his office, so I went to the next logical place, his wood shop. Standing at his drafting table, he was deep in thought while scribbling on a piece of paper.

I momentarily watched him, admiring how his chestnut-colored leather apron stretched across his broad chest and how his brows met in the middle of his forehead when he was working.

“You’re going to stand there and watch, or are you going to say something?” Kemuel asked without looking up.

“I didn’t want to interrupt you.”

“Since when?” He asked, finally making eye contact with me.

“Shut up, Kemuel,” I laughed. “I have an afternoon meeting. Would you like to have lunch with me before I go to my meeting?”

“Would I pass up the opportunity to have lunch with my lady?”

“You wouldn’t be smart if you did.”

“Give me a few minutes. I’ll be ready,” Kem said.
